Triple R Report’s Game of the Day September 1st, 2016: Fowler Grizzlies @ Rocky Ford Meloneers

We’re a little less than two weeks into the 2016 Class 2A Volleyball season and Santa Fe League action is beginning to pick up. Today’s “Triple R Report’s Game of the Day” features the Fowler Grizzlies traveling down Highway 50 to play the Meloneers of Rocky Ford at the “Melon Dome”. Here is how each team stacks up:

Fowler:

  • 0-1 on the early season
    • Lost to Hoehne in 5 sets on Tuesday (25-19, 19-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-7)
  • Looked great in season opener, just came up short
  • Will play Las Animas next Thursday for only game of the week for Grizzlies
  • Fowler will look to bounce back this week against the Meloneers
    • Have played great against Rocky in the past.

Rocky Ford:

  • 2-2 so far in 2016
    • Went 2-1 @ Ellicott Tournament (defeated Ellicott & Center 2-0, lost to Highland 2-0)
    • Lost to John Mall on Tuesday 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-20)
  • Last year the Meloneers:
    • Finished 7th in the Santa Fe League
    • Lost 3-1 to John Mall in the District 6 pigtail
    • Finished Ranked 45th in 2A Volleyball
    • Return 8 players from last year’s varsity squad:
      • Lost Hannah Moore, Hannah Mayne, Leann Sackett, Alexis Mayne to graduation.
        • Moore now playing for Colby CC
      • Lost Kaylee Soltero due to moving
    • Triple R’s bold prediction for the season:
      • “Rocky Ford has been on the move up as of the past few years, look for that to continue in 2016. They’re ready to make some noise in the SFL.

Triple R’s Bold Prediction of the Game:

“Look for Fowler to get out early and stay there. As much as it pains me to say this being a former Meloneer, the Meloneers may have some trouble tonight. They may be playing from behind the whole night. But who knows maybe they’ll prove me wrong.”

Triple R’s Game Prediction:

“Fowler defeats Rocky Ford in 3 sets.”

Well there you have it. Another “Triple R Report’s Game of the Day” preview. But we’re not done be sure to check out our preview as we look at the big RMAC matchup between the #5 CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves and the #18 Colorado School of Mines Orediggers. But if you aren’t going to make that trip all the way up to Golden, go to the Melon Dome and watch some great Santa Fe League Volleyball.

A Cinderella “Story” in the Making

If you haven’t been living under a rock for the past 5 days, you know that “Baseball Is Back”, which means the Colorado Rockies are once again hoping to make a run deep into October. This year they may have found the guy to help them do it. If you don’t know his name by now make sure you take notice of it. The kid is named Trevor Story, and he’s already breaking records…oh did I mention he’s only played in 4 Major League games?

Trevor has made a name for himself in the Majors, most of it being done after just the opening series with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Story went 4-for-14 with an average of .286. You may look at that like “oh, he only has four hits, what’s so special about him?” Those four “little” hits happen to be home-runs. That’s right the kid hit four homers in three games. Two of those came on his Major League debut. Now when the Baseball Hall of Fame asks for your batting helmet and gloves then you know you’ve done something special! For the records Story has set, they include: 1st player to have an Opening Day Debut and hit 2 HR’s, became the 2nd player (since 1900) with 3 HR’s in first 2 career games, 1st player since 1889 to follow a 2 HR debut with a home run in the second game. Story also joins a guy you may know by the name of Todd Helton as the only Rockies to homer in their first two Major League games.

So Major League Baseball and baseball fans especially take note of the kid named Trevor Story, he’s going to do some great things for the Colorado Rockies. This may just be a hunch but I don’t think this kid is quite done writing his “Story”

It’s That Time of Year Again! Baseball Is Back!

Baseball fans can now start to come out from wherever they have been hiding for the past few months, because “Baseball is Back”! District 6 baseball action kicked off  today with 3 games: County Line vs. Crowley County, Fowler vs. Rocky Ford, and Swink vs. Las Animas. Let The Madness Begin! #3 Wray vs. #6 Swink (State Tournament) PREVIEW

Today’s the day Arkansas Valley sports fans! The 2A State Tournament kicks of today at Colorado State University-Pueblo’s Massari Arena. The #6 Seed Swink Lady Lions take on the #3 Seed Wray Lady Eagles. Winner plays in the semi-final tomorrow afternoon. the loser fall to the consolation bracket.

The Lions come into the matchup with an overall record of 21-3 and a Santa Fe League record of 15-1. They had a rough road to the State Tournament.  They had to beat the Rye Thunderbolts twice in the same season, which everyone knows is not easy. Swink and Rye ran away with the SFL #1 and #2 seeds, with the #1 seed being decided by free throw percentage. Wray comes in to the game with an overall record of 18-5 and a Lower Platte aleague record of 7-1. Wray plays in the same league as Yuma so they have experience against a great team.

Swink comes in averaging 43.3 points per game, with an average of 12.1 assist per game. The Lions will need to work the ball inside to their post players. Another must is getting to the free throw line. The cliche is always true, “free throws win games” along with “defense wins championships”. Look for the Swink defense to step up huge tonight in hopes of an upset.

The Eagles come in averaging 65 points per game. They also average 20.5 assists per game, so they move the ball around really well. Look for them to work for a good shot, and use the clock to their advantage. They also like to run the floor, so if the Lions can hold them back from doing that, they should do well in the game

This is Swink’s first State Tournament berth since 2001, so don’t think they’re going to be an easy out while they’re there. This team is coming to play and will look to make some noise. An upset in this game would not surprise me, Swink has been playing really well as of late and their offense is clicking at the right time in the season. Look for the game to be close, possibly coming down to who has the final possession of the game.

Like I’ve said before, they don’t call it “March Madness” for nothing! See you at Massari Arena!

Players to Watch For:

Swink–Taiylor Holland (Senior) & Whitney Nelson (Junior)

Wray–Hannah Lenz (Senior) & Morgan Smith (Freshman)
