Rocky Ford Meloneers Advance 3 To State Finals!

The Rocky Ford Meloneers are looking to repeat as CHSAA Class 2A State Wrestling Champions. Its been a back and forth battle for them as they currently sit in 3rd place, 5.5 points behind leaders Meeker and Centauri. The Meloneers are sending 3 wrestler to the State Championship Matches. Included are 106 pound Junior Jacob Rodriguez ; who is also the defending state 106 pound Champion, Senior 132 pounder Jeremy Fraser; who finished as runner-up last year, and Sophomore 285 pounder Greg Garcia Jr., who finished 6th last year. The Meloneers have 6 wrestlers remaining in the Consolation part of the bracket and they have to battle all day tomoorw. If they win in the morning they’re guaranteed a spot on the podium. I had chance to interview both Greg Garcia Jr., and Head Coach Mike Jurney following Garcia’s Semi-Final win, you can read the below:

1 on 1 with Greg Garcia Jr.:

Me: Greg how does it feel to be wrestling for a State Title tomorrow night?

Greg: It feels great, I owe it all to my coaches who prepared me for this opportunity. They deserve most of the credit, none of this is possible without them.

Me: So what does it mean to you to be a wrestler for the Rocky Ford Meloneers?

Greg: It means everything, there’s a tradition here, its great to be apart of that. We have the best fans in the Valley.

Me: Any words for the fans back home in Rocky Ford?

Greg: Watch out guys, we’re gonna come out firing tomorrow. We’re still in this and we’re gon’ bring that title back home!

1 on 1 With Coach Mike Jurney:

Me: Coach, how does it feel to be sending 3 to the finals tomorrow?

Coach Jurney: It feels great, we got to keep pace. Centauri sent 4 and Meeker sent 3, we’re still a little behind so we got to get going in the consolations tomorrow, and hopefully we can pick up some big points there.

Me: Why Rocky Ford? Why do you chose to coach here?

Coach Jurney: Wrestling has been a passion of mine since i left college. Came to interview in Rocky Ford 25 years ago and i fell in love with it. It’s a great place to be!

Me: Any words for the fans back home in Rocky Ford?

Coach Jurney: Well, just keep cheering for us and we’ll keep fighting. Hope we have a great day tomorrow and see what happens!
