Let The Madness Begin! #3 Wray vs. #6 Swink (State Tournament) PREVIEW

Today’s the day Arkansas Valley sports fans! The 2A State Tournament kicks of today at Colorado State University-Pueblo’s Massari Arena. The #6 Seed Swink Lady Lions take on the #3 Seed Wray Lady Eagles. Winner plays in the semi-final tomorrow afternoon. the loser fall to the consolation bracket.

The Lions come into the matchup with an overall record of 21-3 and a Santa Fe League record of 15-1. They had a rough road to the State Tournament.  They had to beat the Rye Thunderbolts twice in the same season, which everyone knows is not easy. Swink and Rye ran away with the SFL #1 and #2 seeds, with the #1 seed being decided by free throw percentage. Wray comes in to the game with an overall record of 18-5 and a Lower Platte aleague record of 7-1. Wray plays in the same league as Yuma so they have experience against a great team.

Swink comes in averaging 43.3 points per game, with an average of 12.1 assist per game. The Lions will need to work the ball inside to their post players. Another must is getting to the free throw line. The cliche is always true, “free throws win games” along with “defense wins championships”. Look for the Swink defense to step up huge tonight in hopes of an upset.

The Eagles come in averaging 65 points per game. They also average 20.5 assists per game, so they move the ball around really well. Look for them to work for a good shot, and use the clock to their advantage. They also like to run the floor, so if the Lions can hold them back from doing that, they should do well in the game

This is Swink’s first State Tournament berth since 2001, so don’t think they’re going to be an easy out while they’re there. This team is coming to play and will look to make some noise. An upset in this game would not surprise me, Swink has been playing really well as of late and their offense is clicking at the right time in the season. Look for the game to be close, possibly coming down to who has the final possession of the game.

Like I’ve said before, they don’t call it “March Madness” for nothing! See you at Massari Arena!

Players to Watch For:

Swink–Taiylor Holland (Senior) & Whitney Nelson (Junior)

Wray–Hannah Lenz (Senior) & Morgan Smith (Freshman)

Swink Lady Lions Are “Going Dancing” at Massari Arena

The Swink Lady Lions are State Bound! This Thursday the Lions will continue their magical season at Massari Arena on the campus of Colorado State University-Pueblo. Recieving a #6 seed the Lions will go head-to-head with the #3 Wray Lady Eagles at 7pm. There is a lot of work ahead of the girls, but then again they don’t call it “March Madness” for nothing!

I had the opportunity to interview Senior Taiylor Holland and Junior Whitney Nelson:

1 on 1 With Senior Taiylor Holland:

How does it feel to be a Senior, going into your first State Basketball Tournament?

Tay: It feels amazing. We have worked so incredibly hard to get to this point and I know we deserve to be at the State Tournament. I can’t imagine a different way to go out!

What does it mean to you to play for the Swink Lions?

Tay: I’ve gone to Swink all my life, so being able to be a huge part of a program is incredible. Being a Lion is important to me because I’m able to show people just how great Swink is.

What’s the one thing you’re looking forward to this weekend?

Tay: I just want to walk out on that court, win or lose, and show everyone that the Swink Lady Lions Basketball team did something that hasn’t been done since 2001.

Any words for the fans from the Arkansas Valley?

Tay: Honestly, at the end of the day the valley should support one another. So any support would be wonderful and it would push us to do better than expected!

1 on 1 With Junior Whitney Nelson:

How does it feel to be going to the State Basketball Tournament?

Whit: It’s pretty exciting. It’s been a journey getting here but we know we are going to have to put in more work in now if we want to make and impact in the State Tournament!

What’s the best part about being a Swink Lady Lion?

Whit: We are all family. Not just girls playing together. We are one whole unity.

What is one thing you’re looking forward to this weekend?

Whit: Playing with my team at State and hopefully getting the win.

You’ve gone to the State Softball Tournament with Rocky Ford, does going with Swink to the State Basketball Tournament mean more to you?

Whit: It means a lot to me. I’m just lucky to be able to play with a bunch of girls that have the same goal as I do.

Do you have anything to say to the fans of the Arkansas Valley?

Whit: Just thank you for all the support you have given us. And for always believing in us. Without you guys we wouldn’t be where we are now.

Look for the Lady Lions to come out firing, and doing what they do. “March Madness” is upon us folks, and Swink is ready to make some noise!
