Rocky Ford Meloneers vs. Crowley County Chargers (Boys District 6 Semi-Final #2) PREVIEW

The Boys District 6 Semi-Finals tip-off today at “The Pit”. The action is about to pick up folks, as all four teams look to gain that all important District Championship. District 6 will be facing District 8 next week at the Regional Tournament. So seeding out of this tournament is important.

They say the third time is the charm, could that be true for the Rocky Ford Meloneers tonight as they face the Crowley County Chargers in that magical 3rd game? The Meloneers have been improving throughout the year and look to advance to the District Championship, it will be a tough challenge as the Chargers have had their number in both meetings in the season so far. The match-ups have been close, don’t get me wrong. Only bad thing is one bad quarter can spell the worst, for either team. These are two teams I imagine can make some noise in the State next week at Regionals. As for tonight though, just sit back and enjoy the action. It should be interesting and well worth the price of admission.

These teams have been battling each other all year (although they have only met each other twice) for that #2 seed. Crowley County locked up that seed when they defeated Rocky two weeks ago. Games between theses two never fail to disappoint. Be on the lookout for a high scoring game tonight, as both offenses have been known to put up some points. Or who knows, maybe we will be treated to a low scoring, defensive battle. Which ever way this game goes down, it will be great! “The Pit” should be rocking and packed tonight as this game will be played at 7:30pm. Be sure to get there early and watch the “rubber match” between two of the best teams in the Arkansas Valley.

The teams first met on January 16th, at “Charger Gym” in Crowley County. The Chargers left the home crowd happy as they put the Meloneers away by a score of 42-38. This game was competitive throughout, ultimately being decided at the free-throw line. Crowley got to the line late and made theirs, Rocky got to the line but had a tough time having one fall. The first half was low scoring as both teams were in the “feeling out” process. Neither team was able to break the 10-point mark in either the first two quarters. The Chargers took a 14-11 lead into the halftime break. At halftime, in the locker rooms, someone must have flipped the offense switch to “ON” because both teams turned it up. Crowley put up 15 while Rocky put up 10. The Chargers took a 29-21 lead into the final 8 minutes of play. In the fourth Rocky Ford had outscored Crowley County 17-13 but it wasn’t enough as the Chargers escaped with a 4-point victory. Leading Scorers for the game were: Jonathan Montanez of Rocky Ford with 17 points, and Bradley Clabey of Crowley with 14 points.

In the second meeting between the two, the action was close to, if not better than the first. This time the game was played inside of the “Melon Dome” in Rocky Ford. A game could not be anymore close than this one was between these two. At the final buzzer, Crowley County barely squeaked by with a 52-51 victory, off of a late free throw by Grady Carter. Defense was key in this game for both teams, as it always is between these two. Unlike the first match-up, the points started coming early. Rocky got out to the early 10-6 lead in the first and ended the quarter with a score of 16-14. The second period was much of the same as both teams traded baskets. Free throws had not yet been a factor, as Rocky Ford had yet to make a free throw and Crowley had yet to attempt one. Headed into the half the teams were tied at 26. It was much of the same in the second half as both teams came out firing, one basket after another. The Meloneers outscored the Chargers 15-12 and took a 3 point lead into the final quarter. This game wasn’t decided until the last two minutes so let’s fast forward to there. Rocky was up 3 with two minutes remaining, looking for the upset and the #2 seed. But the Chargers were not about to let that happen. The game was tied with 15.4 seconds on the clock Crowley County drove down the court, looked into the post for Grady Carter who went up and……..got fouled. Carter ended up making 1 of 2 from the line and gave the Chargers the 1-point victory and guaranteed them the #2 Seed. Leading Scorers in the game were: Johnathan Montanez of Rocky Ford with 16 points, and Bradley Clabey of Crowley County with 16 points also.

Players to Watch For:

Crowley County–Bradley Clabey & Grady Carter

Rocky Ford–Charlton Amaya & David Trujillo

Rye Lady Thunderbolts vs. Rocky Ford Lady Meloneers (District 6 Girls Quarterfinal) PREVIEW

The game will be played in Rye,as the Thunderbolts come into the gaem as the #2 Seed in the District, while the Meloneers come in as the #7 seed. Rocky comes in off a beating of Swallows Charter Academy in the Pigtail game last Thursday,

Rye has done well in the Santa Fe League this year, and they would have been the #1 seed had they beat the Swink Lions one more time. Rye and Swink were tied for the #1 seed but due to the tie-breaker (Free Throw Percentage), the Lions were granted the 1 seed. Rocky Ford has had a rough season, but an upset here could make everyone forget that, fact. Rocky is a team that will not give up, they will play to the final buzzer. Be on the lookout for more of the same from the Meloneers.

The teams met twice throughout the season with Rye winning both, the first meeting being in Rye, a tough place to play for any team, on January 12th and the Thunderbolt coming away with a 40-23 victory, Leading scorers for the game were: Hannah Moore of Rocky Ford with 9 points, and Sarah Lesser of Rye with 17 points.

The second meeting was in Rocky Ford on January 29th with Rye coming away with a slime 25-18 victory. Rocky played well throughout and almost pulled it out but Rye got to the free throw line more late in the game than the Meloneers and pulled away and claimed the victory.Neither team was able to break the 10-point mark for any quarter in the game.

Rocky will play hard, won’t give up and will try to upset the Thunderbolts to advance to OJC to play on Saturday. Look for the game to be a defensive battle throughout and it may just come down to who has the ball last. Should be a great one from Rye tonight.

Players to Watch For:

Rocky Ford–Stephanie Frantz & Kaylee Soltero

Rye– Sarah Lesser & Laura Ambler

Las Animas Lady Trojans vs. Crowley County Lady Chargers (District 6 Girls Quarterfinal) PREVIEW

Also slated for District 6 Girls Tournament action tonight is the Las Animas Lady Trojans vs. Crowley County Lady Chargers. The game will be played in Las Animas. Win and you go on, lose and track season begins.

Las Animas started off the year strong, they had a strong start in the Santa Fe League. Then things began to drop off but none the less they come in as the 4 seed and have the home court advantage. Crowley County comes in as the #5 Seed, Crowley ended the season with a nail biting loss to Rocky Ford, and looks to take some of that aggression out on Las Animas.

The Trojans and Chargers have met twice this season, with Las Animas taking both. They first met on December 18th, the game was in Ordway. The Trojans escaped the game with an 8 point victory, the final score was 41-33. Crowley County had the lead headed into the half but Las Animas stormed back with a huge second half holding Crowley to only 11 points all half. Swink Lady Lions vs. John Mall Lady Panthers (District 6 Girls Quarter-Final) PREVIEW

The girls side of the District 6 Tournament tips-off today, we have the preview for all 4 match-ups. First up we’ll look at the Swink Lady Lions vs. John Mall Lady Panthers. The game will be played in Swink at the “Lions Den”. The Lady Lions come in as the top overall #1 Seed in the Distritct 6 Tourney. John Mall comes in as a #8 Seed, after they defeated the Dolores Huerta Scorpions last Thursday in the Play-In game.

Swink’s season has been a complete turn-around from last years when they went 9-14 overall and 7-9 in the Santa Fe League, they come into the tournament this year at 16-3 overall and 15-1 in the Santa Fe League. It helps when you have the numbers to have a complete bench and with the help of Head Coach Kurt Lewis the Lions have become a force to reckon with in the District. John Mall comes into the contest at 4-16 overall and 2-14 in the Santa Fe League. Its been a down year for the Panthers as they are looking for a big upset to solidify their season and advance to play two more weeks of basketball.

The Lions and Panthers have met twice this year with Swink winning both games by huge margins. The teams first met on January 15th in Walsenburg where the Lady Lions ran away with a 56-20 victory. Leading scorers for the game were: Kyla O’Neal/Brianna Denton of the Lions who put up 16 a piece, and Erika Bradsby for the Panthers who put up 13. The Lions got up to a early 11-3 1st quarter lead and the game was never close again.

The teams met once again on February 11th, although the game venue moved to Swink the result did not change. The Lions once again blew out the Panthers this time by a score of 75-29. Leading scorers were: Kyla O’Neal of the Lions with 19 points, and Casiddy Dotter of the Panthers with 7 points. Swink once again pulled out to the early lead and never looked back.

With this game being a #1 vs. #8, a blowout wouldn’t be a big surprise for me. Swink has been playing great basketball down the stretch and is looking to make some noise in the Class 2A Postseason. After having years lacking the numbers to advance far in the Tournaments, look for the Lions to surprise a few people and make it really far this year.

Players to Watch For:

Swink– Taiylor Holland & Kyla O’Neal

John Mall– Cassidy Dotter & Erika Bradsby
