Rye Lady Thunderbolts vs. Rocky Ford Lady Meloneers (District 6 Girls Quarterfinal) PREVIEW

To continue our coverage of District 6 Basketball we move onto the game between the Lady Thunderbolts of Rye and the Lady Meloneers of Rocky Ford. The game will be played in Rye,as the Thunderbolts come into the gaem as the #2 Seed in the District, while the Meloneers come in as the #7 seed. Rocky comes in off a beating of Swallows Charter Academy in the Pigtail game last Thursday,

Rye has done well in the Santa Fe League this year, and they would have been the #1 seed had they beat the Swink Lions one more time. Rye and Swink were tied for the #1 seed but due to the tie-breaker (Free Throw Percentage), the Lions were granted the 1 seed. Rocky Ford has had a rough season, but an upset here could make everyone forget that, fact. Rocky is a team that will not give up, they will play to the final buzzer. Be on the lookout for more of the same from the Meloneers.

The teams met twice throughout the season with Rye winning both, the first meeting being in Rye, a tough place to play for any team, on January 12th and the Thunderbolt coming away with a 40-23 victory, Leading scorers for the game were: Hannah Moore of Rocky Ford with 9 points, and Sarah Lesser of Rye with 17 points.

The second meeting was in Rocky Ford on January 29th with Rye coming away with a slime 25-18 victory. Rocky played well throughout and almost pulled it out but Rye got to the free throw line more late in the game than the Meloneers and pulled away and claimed the victory.Neither team was able to break the 10-point mark for any quarter in the game.

Rocky will play hard, won’t give up and will try to upset the Thunderbolts to advance to OJC to play on Saturday. Look for the game to be a defensive battle throughout and it may just come down to who has the ball last. Should be a great one from Rye tonight.

Players to Watch For:

Rocky Ford–Stephanie Frantz & Kaylee Soltero

Rye– Sarah Lesser & Laura Ambler

Las Animas Lady Trojans vs. Crowley County Lady Chargers (District 6 Girls Quarterfinal) PREVIEW

Also slated for District 6 Girls Tournament action tonight is the Las Animas Lady Trojans vs. Crowley County Lady Chargers. The game will be played in Las Animas. The Trojans come in as the #4 seed in the District and will host the #5 Lady Chargers. Both teams look to advance to Otero Junior College on Thursday for the District Semi-Finals. Win and you go on, lose and track season begins.

Las Animas started off the year strong, they had a strong start in the Santa Fe League. Then things began to drop off but none the less they come in as the 4 seed and have the home court advantage. Crowley County comes in as the #5 Seed, Crowley ended the season with a nail biting loss to Rocky Ford, and looks to take some of that aggression out on Las Animas.

The Trojans and Chargers have met twice this season, with Las Animas taking both. They first met on December 18th, the game was in Ordway. The Trojans escaped the game with an 8 point victory, the final score was 41-33. Crowley County had the lead headed into the half but Las Animas stormed back with a huge second half holding Crowley to only 11 points all half. Leading scorers for the game were: Sahara Snead of Las Animas with 15 points, and Annie Brewer for Crowley with 7 points.

The second meeting between the two was in Las Animas on January 30th, the Trojans ran away with a 47-29 victory. The Trojans score double digits in 3 of the 4 quarters and took the game without a problem from Crowley. Las Animas got out to the early lead and never looked back. Leading scorers for each team were: Katie Schwartz of Crowley County with 10 points, and Angelica Melendez of Las Animas with 10.

Look for the game to be close throughout, and once again free throws to decide the winner. The team getting to the line the most is going to end up coming away with a victory. Remember it is a win or go home game. Win and you move on to play at OJC on Thursday.

Players to Watch For:

Las Animas– Sahara Snead & Haylie Stwalley

Crowley County– Clara Whitehead & Aisha Reed

Swink Lady Lions vs. John Mall Lady Panthers (District 6 Girls Quarter-Final) PREVIEW

The girls side of the District 6 Tournament tips-off today, we have the preview for all 4 match-ups. First up we’ll look at the Swink Lady Lions vs. John Mall Lady Panthers. The game will be played in Swink at the “Lions Den”. The Lady Lions come in as the top overall #1 Seed in the Distritct 6 Tourney. John Mall comes in as a #8 Seed, after they defeated the Dolores Huerta Scorpions last Thursday in the Play-In game.

Swink’s season has been a complete turn-around from last years when they went 9-14 overall and 7-9 in the Santa Fe League, they come into the tournament this year at 16-3 overall and 15-1 in the Santa Fe League. It helps when you have the numbers to have a complete bench and with the help of Head Coach Kurt Lewis the Lions have become a force to reckon with in the District. John Mall comes into the contest at 4-16 overall and 2-14 in the Santa Fe League. Its been a down year for the Panthers as they are looking for a big upset to solidify their season and advance to play two more weeks of basketball.

The Lions and Panthers have met twice this year with Swink winning both games by huge margins. The teams first met on January 15th in Walsenburg where the Lady Lions ran away with a 56-20 victory. Leading scorers for the game were: Kyla O’Neal/Brianna Denton of the Lions who put up 16 a piece, and Erika Bradsby for the Panthers who put up 13. The Lions got up to a early 11-3 1st quarter lead and the game was never close again.

The teams met once again on February 11th, although the game venue moved to Swink the result did not change. The Lions once again blew out the Panthers this time by a score of 75-29. Leading scorers were: Kyla O’Neal of the Lions with 19 points, and Casiddy Dotter of the Panthers with 7 points. Swink once again pulled out to the early lead and never looked back.

With this game being a #1 vs. #8, a blowout wouldn’t be a big surprise for me. Swink has been playing great basketball down the stretch and is looking to make some noise in the Class 2A Postseason. After having years lacking the numbers to advance far in the Tournaments, look for the Lions to surprise a few people and make it really far this year.

Players to Watch For:

Swink– Taiylor Holland & Kyla O’Neal

John Mall– Cassidy Dotter & Erika Bradsby

Crowley County Chargers @ Rocky Ford Meloneer POST-GAME

And that’s a wrap from the “Melon Dome” the Chargers and Meloneers split the two varsity games tonight, Both games were briskly played and the refs allowed them to play. As I stated in the preview, both games were shootouts and came down to the last 2 minutes.

Lets start with the girls game, it was Crowley who jumped out to the early lead, but in the Santa Fe League no one should be considered out till the clock reads :00 in the 4th quarter. The Meloneers stormed back and won by a score of 45-41. Only bad thing for the Meloneers was that the Hoehne Farmers defeated the John Mall Panthers. Meaning Hoehne is the #6 seed, and Rocky is the #7 seed in the upcoming District Play-in Games. Rocky Ford will be hosting John Mall on Thursday evening at the Melon Dome. Other District pairings will be posted when they’re published.

Now to possibly the reason everyone packed the “Melon Dome” last night. The boy’s action! It was everything everyone hoped it was going to be, well worth the price of admission. The Chargers got off to a fast start gaining the early lead on the Meloneers, never count Rocky Ford out of a game though! The Meloneers stormed back and the ballgame was tied heading in to the half at 26. Scoring was pretty even in the third period with Rocky Ford taking a 3 point lead into the fourth quarter. They exploded out of the gate, and took a BIG 8 point lead with  5 minutes remaining. But as i stated in the Preview, the game came down to the free throw line. A late foul with 3.8 left on the clock sent Grady Carter to the line and he made 1 of 2. Thus giving the Chargers a 52-51 victory. Earning the Chargers the #2 seed and giving the Meloneers the #3.

Crowley County will host John Mall in the District 6 Pigtail game on Monday , while Rocky Ford will host Fowler also on Monday. The two winners wil then advance to the District 6 Tournament, next Thursday and Friday at Otero Junior College.

Be ready Santa Fe League Basketball fans, we’re in for a good one at the District 6 Tournament!

Crowley County Chargers @ Rocky Ford Meloneers PREVIEW

Its GAMEDAY!!

The Crowley County Chargers travel 13 miles down Highway 71 and invade the “Melon Dome”, to do battle with the Meloneers of Rocky Ford. In quite possibly one of the biggest rivalries in the Arkansas Valley.

The Lady Chargers come into the match-up 5th in the Santa Fe League ( 7-11 Overall, 7-5 SFL), while the Lady Meloneers come in 7th in the Santa Fe League (6-13 Overall, 5-10 SFL). The Lady Chargers come in already having the 5th seed in the upcoming District 6 Pigtail games, as the Lady Meloneers are looking to win (and hoping for a Hoehne loss @John Mall tonight) to move up to the 6th spot heading into next weeks pigtails. Look for tonights game to be close as the Meloneers are looking to come out still sizzling from their 90-10 all out beating of Swallows last Thursday. Crowley County looks to improve as they narrowly beat Hoehne 46-45 last Thursday as well. Both teams looking for momentum heading into Districts next week!

Players to Watch For:

–Clara Whitehead & Madison Berg (Crowley County)

–Stephanie Frantz & Hannah Moore (Rocky Ford)

Now to the Boys side of things, this one is for the #2 seed in the District pigtail game next Tuesday! Ask John Tomky and he’ll tell you that I am on record saying that this match-up will have major implications on seeding in District 6.

The Chargers come in 2nd in the SFL (15-3 Overall, 12-3 SFL), while Rocky Ford comes in 1 game back in 3rd (14-5 Overall, 11-4 SFL). Like i stated above this game is BIG for both teams, both are wanting and in my opinion deserving of a 2 seed in the District Tournament. Look for this game to be a shootout, being decided at the free throw line. It’ll all come down to who can shoot the most free throws. Rocky comes in narrowly escaping with an 8-point victory over Swallows last Thursday, while Crowley comes in hoping to turn things around after being upset on the road by Hoehne 46-37.

Players to Watch For:

–Bradley Clabey & Bryce Buhr (Crowley County)

–Johnathan Montanez & David Trujillo (Rocky Ford)

So if you’re in the area make sure to stop by the “Melon Dome” and catch some great Santa Fe League Basketball action tonight.
