Triple R Report’s Game of the Day: John Mall Panthers @ Rocky Ford Meloneers (2A Santa Fe League Basketball)

We’re one week away from all sports breaking for Christmas Break. We have a huge early season Santa Fe League matchup happening at the “Melon Dome” tonight. The Panthers of John Mall travel down to take on Rocky Ford. The Meloneers will finish before Christmas Break with a 3-game home stand. And if history says anything the Meloneers are tough to beat at home.

It’s been a good first few weeks of the season for both Panther teams. They each begin the season 3-1. All of which have been key non-conference matchups. They each competed in the tough Trinidad State Tournament and did well for a 2A team. Each of their losses came from that tournament. The Lady Panthers fell to the tough Trinidad Lady Miners who also defeated the La Junta Lady Tigers. Then the boys ran into powerhouse Manitou Springs, which also defeated the La Junta boys.

At the Trinidad State Tournament, each team went 2-1. The Lady Panthers were knocked to the consolation bracket after a 57-35 loss to the Lady Miners of Trinidad, while the boys advanced to the semifinals after defeating Trinidad in a close 71-68 game. In the consolation semi-final, the girls defeated Springer (NM) 41-38, while the boys were defeated by 3A powerhouse Manitou Springs in the championship semi-final 84-53. In the 5th place game the Lady Panthers defeated Raton (NM) 52-43, the boys took 3rd at the tournament with a 74-45 victory also over Raton. Then both teams played Dolores Huerta, with the girls winning 47-17 and the boys winning as well 70-64.

In what has been an early season of success the Panthers have proved they can compete in the Santa Fe League. The question remains; can they keep it up? In my opinion I don’t think so. The league is going to be tough, well it always is. There has been one thing I’ve learned over my years of playing in and covering high school sports; don’t ever count any team out until the final horn sounds.

It’s been an early season of struggles for both Meloneer Basketball teams. The girls have begun the season with an 0-3 overall record and they’re 0-1 in the Santa Fe League. But they have run into three tough teams to begin the season. The boys’ have begun 1-2. Just like the girls’, it’s been a tough 3 game stretch for the Meloneers.

It all began when both teams traveled to Crowley County for an early league matchup. The Lady Meloneers lost a close one 40-38, while the boys did the opposite they defeated the Chargers 56-44 in overtime. They then traveled to Florence to take on the 3A Huskies. It was once again the same result for the girls, they lost big to the Lady Huskies 48-16. The boys also lost to an always tough Florence team, 49-29. To end the first 3 games of the season Rocky Ford hosted Center at the “Melon Dome”. IT was much of the same as both teams went down in defeat. The girls by a score of 41-25 and the boys by a score of 51-26.

The good thing for Rocky Ford is it’s early in the season, and there is plenty more games to come. For the girls, it’s going to be a tough league schedule for them. The Lady Grizzlies, Lady Lions, and Lady Chargers it’s going to be interesting to see who comes out on top. On the boy’s side of things, it’ll be a 3-team race: The Chargers, Grizzlies, and Meloneers all have excellent shots to earn the #1 seed in District 6 come late February.

Here’s how each team stacks up heading into tonight’s matchup:

    • William Valdez (Junior)
    • Derrick Lucero (Senior)

Triple R’s Bold Prediction of the Game:

“Losing back-to-back games is unfamiliar territory for the Meloneers, that streak ends here. It has been awhile since John Mall has defeated Rocky Ford at “The Dome”. Tonight, is no different, everything is clicking for the Meloneers and they improve to 2-0 in the SFL.”

Triple R’s Game Prediction:

“Meloneers defeat Panthers easily 60-42.”

It All Comes Down to This! #6 Kent Denver Sun Devils @ #1 La Junta Tigers (CHSAA Class 2A Football State Championship)

It’s only been two years since the Kent Denver Sun Devils have played for a football state championship, its been “just a bit longer” for the La Junta Tigers, 54 years to be exact. It’s been even longer since they have won one. It was back in 1958 that the Tigers hoisted a football championship. At least one of those streaks is going to end on Saturday. We at least know for sure the Tigers will play for the title, but they’re going to have to do it against a tough Kent Denver team who always seems to play tough in late November.

These teams have taken completely different path into the 2A State Title Game. Kent Denver entered the tournament as the #6 seed, they hosted #11 Weld Central in the 1st Round and in what started off a slow start for the Sun Devils turned into a huge win. At halftime the score was 7-3, but it was all Kent Denver in the second half. They outscored Weld Central 20-3 to win the ballgame 27-6. Leading the way for the Sun Devils was; Charles McKissick with 16 carries for 93 yards & Joshua McDonald with 3 receptions for 43 yards.

Next up for Kent was the #3 The Classical Academy Titans, a team that play’s in La Junta’s Tri-Peaks League. Kent Denver got out early and took a 14-3 lead into the locker room. But it was the Titans who outscored the Sun Devils 18-7 in the second half. Not even 48 minutes could decide a winner in this quarterfinal matchup. They went into overtime. All the Titans could muster was a field goal from, Auburn Tiger commit, Anders Carlson. That put the score at 24-21, but it was Kent Denver’s chance to have the ball and much to the Titan’s despise they scored a touchdown and thus punched their ticket to the semi-final, in an upset no one saw coming. Leading the way for Kent Denver was; Joshua McDonald with 22 carries for 128 yards & Conrad Lost with 1 reception for 30 yards.

Then it came to last weeks semi-final matchup with the #10 Delta Panthers, a team who had been pulling upsets off left and right. It was yet another close game for the Sun Devils as they found themselves down 7-0 early but came back to take a 14-7 lead into halftime. The Sun Devils came out strong in the second half and outscored the Panthers 14-7. Leading the way for Kent was; Charles McKissick with 14 carries for 152 yards & Max Waldbaum with 4 receptions for 63 yards. When the clock read three zeros it was Kent Denver who would advance to play for the Championship, all that remained to be known was who and where would they be playing.

As the #1 Seed the Tigers blew out their first two opponents. It all started with the #16 University Bulldogs, the game was at Tiger Stadium and the Tigers just crushed the Bulldogs. The final score was 42-0, but it could have been far worse. Leading the way rushing for the Tigers was Sophomore QB Jon Nuschy who had 17 rushes for 138 yards. The Tigers didn’t use the pass very much, but the receiving leader was Izaiah Petique with 1 reception for 51 yards.

Then came the quarterfinal matchup with the #9 D’Evelyn Jaguars, this time the Tigers had to travel to Lakewood, but they made themselves at home. It was again an all out beatdown from the Tigers. They handled the Jaguars 41-7. It was all Tigers from the get go. Which is what it should be as a #1 seed. Leading the way for La Junta was; Jon Nuschy with 19 carries for 118 yards & Deron Bletson with 1 reception for 73 yards.

The Tigers were one game away from playing for a championship that eluded them for 58 years. In the semifinal they met the #5 Bayfield Wolverines, the team who had knocked them out almost a year ago to the day. The Tigers wanted revenge and early it didn’t look like they would get it. There was no scoring in the first quarter, but the Wolverines got on the board in the second on a deep pass, the extra point was wide right. That was all the scoring in the first half and Bayfield went into the locker room up 6-0. To start the second half it was all defensive once again, until late in the third quarter when Bayfield yet again struck with a deep pass. The time the extra point was good and Bayfield took a 13-0 lead in the fourth quarter.

From all my years of playing and watching sports I’ve learned to never count a team out until the game is over. La Junta proved that once again is true. The Tigers scored first with eight minutes left in the 4th, with the extra point being fumbled the Tigers trailed 13-6. An interception deep into Tiger territory gave La Junta the chance they needed. A long drive down the field capped off by an endzone fade to Matthew Espinoza put the Tigers down one with a little more than 2 minutes left. A false start penalty pushed the extra point try back even further. Coach Buderus took a timeout and the Tigers were lined up to go for two.

On a play that looked busted from the snap, Apela Furtado-tom was off balance and was a lob to the end zone found tightend Kain DiRizza. The Tigers had the lead, and on a squib kick that hit a Bayfield player had the ball back. This time for good, one that final drive the Wolverines used all three of their timeouts and the Tigers ran out the clock.

That puts us where we are at right now.

Triple R’s bold Prediction of the Game:

“Both teams rely heavily on the run game, its going to come down to who’s defense can stop who’s run game. Advantage LJ.”

Triple R’s Game Prediction:

“It’s a State Championship game, it’s suppose to be close isn’t it? Not in this case, La Junta wins easily 21-7.”

Well this is what it comes down to. This is what La Junta has waited a little more than half a century for.

Saturday. 1pm.

Tiger Stadium. 2A State Title Game.

#1 La Junta. #6 Kent Denver.

Need I say more?

Triple R Report’s Game of the Week: Crowley County Chargers @ Rocky Ford Meloneers (Crimson Helmet Game/Santa Fe League Championship)

In quite possibly the biggest game of the year in the Arkansas Valley, Crowley County travels down Highway 71 to Rocky Ford to do battle with the Meloneers. Unlike past years this game means more than just bragging rights. On top of the “Crimson Helmet” Trophy, also up for grabs is: the Santa Fe League Championship & a playoff spot.

Both teams deserve to be in the postseason but, due to RPI playing a factor now, only one probably will. But don’t get me started on that. The Chargers Comes in 14th in RPI while the Meloneers come in 24th. Only League Champions get automatic bids to the postseason. Followed by the next top 8 teams.

With Rocky Ford being so low in RPI I don’t see them getting in the playoffs without a win tonight, with a loss the Meloneers will start Wrestling/Basketball season. Crowley County with a win is in, with a loss they will be cutting it close.

The “Crimson Helmet” series has been owned by Crowley County. The Meloneers have never owned the trophy, nor have the Meloneers scored a game for the trophy. Crowley is outscoring Rocky Ford 197-0. But this year has been a different one than past ones for the Meloneers.

It’s all going to go down in Rocky Ford tonight. Kickoff is set for 7pm, catch all the action on 92.1 FM and network1sports.com. Craig and Randy will have the call. But first here’s how each team is faring heading into the game:

    • Teams are averaging 172.6 rushing yards

  • Opponents are averaging 17.6 points per game
  • Players to Watch For:

Triple R’s Bold Prediction of the Game:

‘It’ll be a close one all night, both teams want it. It’s going to come down to who wants it more. It is going to take longer than 48 minutes to decide this one. Which means…OVERTIME!”

Triple R’s Game Prediction:

“Chargers defeat Meloneers 30-24 in Overtime.”

Fun Facts/Trivia From the Week:

  • Since 2004, Crowley County has won 7 of the 12 meetings. The longest win streak in that time frame is Crowley County, 5 games (2011-2015) … Rocky’s longest streak in that time frame is 4 games (2005-2008)
  • Since the “Crimson Helmet” Trophy was introduced in 2012, which team has outscored the other and what is the point differential?
    • Crowley County, Rocky Ford has never scored in the “Crimson Helmet Game”. The Chargers have outscored the Meloneer 197-0 in games where the trophy is up for grabs.
  • Since 2004, of the 12 League Championships up for grabs, Crowley County has won 4 (’04, ’11, ’14, ’15). Rocky Ford has won 2 (’05, ’07
  • Since the “Crimson Helmet Game” was introduced in 2012, which team has a higher total yard average and what is the difference in yardage? (Only games between Crowley County & Rocky Ford)
    • Crowley County holds the higher total yard average. They’ve averaged 421 total yards to Rocky’s 68 total yards. That is a difference of 353 yards.

I already know the prediction isn’t going to set well with some people but Rocky has not proved to me they can win when it counts. I hope they prove me wrong tonight. Crowley is just the better team on paper. As we all know though anything can happen in High School sports. This was a tough game to predict, my heart wanted Rocky to win but history just is not on their side. Kickoff from Rocky Ford is at 7pm, catch the action on 92.1 FM and network1sports.com.

As of now the game-time temperature is at 59 degrees, with the temperature dropping to 51 by the time the game ends, look for this to play a key factor tonight.”

Triple R’s Game Prediction:

“Ellicott comes out on top over Rocky Ford in a hard fought victory 20-14. The game won’t be decided until the 4th quarter.”
