Meloneers Look to Improve On Last Season

Official practice for fall sports began on Monday. So that means back to the gridiron it was for the Rocky Ford Meloneers. This year though they will be playing on a new surface. The Melon Field was completed over the summer and is ready for use by the Meloneers. Coach Sean McNames remains at the head of the operation. In his two years as coach of the Meloneers, McNames has compiled an 11-7 record. The Meloneers have only lost 3 league games in those two years. Each year has had a winning season, but the Meloneers have failed to make the playoffs due to RPI. This year could be the Meloneers year as Crowley County graduated a number of Seniors last year. Rocky Ford lost 11 Seniors to graduation, included in that is Running Back Diego Reyes, Linebacker Zeke Torrez and Wide Receiver Carlos Romo. The Meloneers return a bunch of talent from last year though, including Senior Wide Receiver David Trujillo, Junior Quarterback Isiah Garcia and Junior Offensive/Defensive Lineman Simon Apodaca. The Meloneers open the season with the first football game played at the new Melon Field August 24th against Florence
